The Three Norns

In Norse mythology there are three very similar figures to the three fates of the Greeks, they were known as the three Norns, they were Urd, Skald and Verdandi, the rulers of fate, being and necessity, because all things happened by their unalterable decree, they knew the past Urd, the present Skald, and also the future  Verdandi.

We have only to think of the three witches in Macbeth to realise how potent these images remain.
