God the Geometer

Numerology, geometry and astrology are ancient and profound bedfellows. Unbroken systems of thought they share roots reaching back to Mesopotamia. But it was Pythagorus who made of it a sacred art for whom numbers were less quantities but spiritual qualities linked to the divine.

The compass in this 13th century manuscript titled God the Geometer is a symbol of God's act of Creation. God has created the universe after geometric and harmonic principles, to seek these principles was therefore to seek and worship God. For many this was realised in the numerical intricacies of the horoscope.

Compare it with the much later painting by William Blake's painting"God dividing the universe" from The Ancient of Days.
