Your Father & Mother

Or as Oscar Wilde would have it: All women become like their mothers,- that’s their tragedy.  No man does, that’s his.

Your "Father" and "Mother" as they appear in dreams represent not only your real parents but also the subjective inner images of the mother and father within, describing the qualities you experienced as dominant with whoever played the role of mother or father in your early life. Dreams involving your parents then, will also bring to consciousness the qualities they seemed to possess, some of which were lived out in their lives, while some were all the more powerful in there affect on your developing personality because they were not.  As C G Jung observed: Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on the environment and especially on their children than the unlived life of the parent.

Your Father and your Mother then, as the first man and woman in your life, are potent unconscious influences. These images also tend to be somewhat polarised and stereotypical in terms of traditional gender roles and gender divisions.

The image of your father appearing in your dream then, will be a complex inner image that will represent what the masculine principle means to you.

As the first man in your life the image of the Father is a potent unconscious force. This image will describe how you relate to the masculine within, as well as the ways of expressing the goal oriented side of the personality. Represented too are the inner father-qualities, such as capacity for courage, spirit and truth, the formulation of ethical codes and connection to the source of personal creativity. The manner in which these goals are envisaged, pursued, and potential actualised, expressed and directed will also be described here. The father principal is really describing a way of being out in the larger world of work and career.

Father appearing in the dreams of a woman then, involves not only how the relationship with men is in general but also the qualities of individual men that will be attractive.

As a daughter grows up, her emotional and spiritual growth is deeply affected by her relationship to her father. He is the first masculine figure in her life and is a prime shaper of the way she relates to her masculine side of her herself and ultimately to men.

In a man's dream, the father image represents, among other things, the "psychic stuff" you and your father share.  What you meet through your father and the qualities he seemed to possess; some of these were lived out creatively in his life, some were all the more powerful in their effect on your developing personality because they were not. As such, "father" is not only a real person, but also the subjective inner image of the father within, describing the qualities you experienced as dominant with whoever played the role of father in your early life.

As the first man in your life, your father is a potent unconscious influence, representing what the masculine principle means to you, how you relate to the masculine within, how you relate to other men, and the sort of father you are/will be to your own children. Also described here will be your own inner father, qualities such as how you envisage and pursue your goals, actualise your potential and express and direct your will.

Similarly, partly because of social conditioning, and partly because dreams often present clearly identifiable images, mother appearing in a woman's dreams appears, often not only as a real person but also as a subjective experience that symbolises the feminine in all her many forms. What follows then will be descriptions of the qualities most dominant in your relationship with your mother.

If you are a man the image of your mother in dreams will bring up some of what animates your life, gives it meaning and connects you to its deepest reaches. It will also characterize the qualities that you will unconsciously seek out in the women you will be attracted too.

For both women and men you will see mirrored within this image descriptions of what the "feminine" represents to you and your feminine side . How you relate to women and the emotional, instinctual dimensions of your personality will be also shown here.  Also, descriptions of your own maternal qualities of nurture and caring, for yourself and for others, your ability to flow with the rhythms of time and to trust in your inner-prompting and inner knowing fall under this huge subject.
